Review of Isn't She Great (2000) by Paul D — 09 Feb 2009
I'm in the camp of those who saw this without knowing anything about Susann. And in all honesty, that's probably why I enjoyed this more than most critics seemed to. If you dropped the real names and the Valley of the Dolls references in place of a fictional author and work, it'd probably be received better.
The lead characters in the film pull their roles off with surprising sincerity and unabashed confidence. The script is cliched, but still moves at a pace that keeps viewers watching. Now having read up on Susann and the Valley book, I can imagine my reaction would be quite different if I had read it and expected an accurate bio-pic.
This was not intended though to be a true biography, and for what it actually is it isn't bad.
