Review of Into the Abyss (2011) by Emily W — 05 Dec 2011
This film doesn't stand much of a chance to reach many viewers given the grim subject matter competing with The Muppets & Santa Claus. Too bad. Even if you've made your mind up about capital punishment and don't care to weather a [surprisingly] fair and balanced case study of a Texas triple homocide and subsequent execution, Into the Abyss is worth your attention.
The delicate unveiling of indelicate people, from perpetrators to victims to clergy to prison personnel, is riveting and revealing. I found myself flinching, shaking my head, muttering, and shifting in my seat--a TPR, total physical response, to our painfully fragile human condition, which I now understand just a little better.
