Review of Import/Export (2007) by David F — 15 Jun 2009
Bleak and depressing appear to be the words used to describe Seidlâ??s stylish take on the European social drama. At times what happens on screen is in complete contrast to the artistic framing Seidl chooses to use.
It reminded me very much of You, The Living which has a similar approach albeit with deadpan humour which might be inappropriate at times here. Import/Export doesnâ??t trivialise the subject matter by painting a more visually appealing film, although there are scenes that combine absurdity with horror which makes for uncomfortable viewing.
Overall it captures the lifestyles and environments of the film gifting you the experience of their unpleasantness whilst packaging it in a consumer friendly manner not unlike watching what happens to these humans when they are treated as similar commodities.
