Review of Himizu (2012) by James-Masaki R — 26 Sep 2012
"Himizu" is a live action adaptation of the comic of the same name, about a teenage boy whose parents both decide to abandon him. In post-tsunami Japan, Sono decided to add the disaster factor into the story, fitting perfectly with the social consciousness of Japan at the moment.
The lead teen actors are incredibly good as the anti-couple, supported by actors who are familiar faces in the world of Sono films. Disturbing yet not exploitative, and depressing and cynical as it is hopeful, "Himizu" is one of Sono's most inspiring and emotional films.
