Review of High Art (1998) by Alyssa N — 27 Apr 2008
This is a beautiful depiction of a lesbian romance, and not just because of the stunning cinematography and direction. The two lead actresses have obvious chemistry, but at the same time there's an awkwardness there that makes the protagonist's coming out experience much more honest, and the slower pacing makes their developing relationship much more real.
My biggest problem is that the ending is clearly a cop-out for the writers, a way for them to avoid confronting the complicated situation they'd gotten the characters into. A disappointment in an otherwise stirring and worthwhile movie.
