Having watched the extras on the DVD the director said his measure of success is if certain images stay with viewers for years after they have seen the film. He's been massively successful with this film. I saw it when it first came out (around 5 years ago) and that's what stayed with me - how amazing this film looks.
Having watched it again I am happily reminded that the plot and characters are pretty dang good too. You must watch this in the original language with subtitles though. Not only will you not be distracted by bad dubbing you will also get to chuckle at all the "Yaaaaaagh!" subtitles.
