Review of Henry Fool (1998) by Michael O — 28 Aug 2008
Wes Anderson: Indie. Todd Solondz: Indie. Hal Hartley: Indie Plus. I didn't like the movie because like the movie states, you can't fight about taste. However, I did like that any sort of kindness or change or love the characters give one another stems from guilt.
Hal Hartley has a quirky way of looking at raw prose and that point of view is in the right place. It's why I'd consider him as a good candidate for director of the next Bukowski movie. He approaches the grimy and brutal aspects of humanity in a lighthearted way, which makes sense if you've ever read a book by Bukowski.
Henry Fool is a movie I didn't particularly enjoy seeing, because of a weak screenplay and turgid camera. Yet that I can admire.
