Review of Hail Mary (1985) by Tyler A — 11 Oct 2007
The odd pose of Godard as metaphysical seeker makes Hail Mary a true curio in the master materialists ever-curious ouevre, but it's the frission between his radical, standard setting sound/image juxtapositions and something aproaching genuine spiritual yearning in the performances (particularly the devine Ms. Roussel) that make this his most emotionally affecting film (that I've seen anyway).
Along with Passion and Detective, Hail Mary proves that Godard's 80's work is just as interesting as the string of groundbreakers from his Nouvelle Vague halcyon days.
