Review of Grizzly Man (2005) by Hourmazd H — 25 Mar 2013
Quite possibly one of the greatest documentaries ever filmed and certainly one of Herzog's best. The incorporation of Treadwell's own footage in between interviews, overlaid with Herzog's commentary allows for a multiangle assessment of Treadwell's unusual life and convictions.
Certain scenes almost take a life of their own, as if not directed or controlled, with interviewees simply flowing into their own train of thought, forgetting the presence of the camera. Herzog's brilliance surfaces in these poignant parts where he simply allows the filming to continue and maintains the natural countenance of the humans reflecting on a man's life.
