Okay, objectively speaking, this film is not that good, with a story that never picks up full steam. And some bad acting. (Hey, it's Ken Russell, not Hitchcock, okay?) But I just couldn't bring myself to give it any less than a four-star rating, because it's just so fucking ridiculous and.
.. Gothic! This, my friends, is the very definition of the Gothic genre. Campy, creepy, bombastic, and yet so bad it's good. It's the first movie that made eating pasta look disgusting.
