Two parallels...the woman and Taiwan showing a false connection to the past. The Taiwanese go to China and are betrayed by the Chinese and there is a communication problem. They are further betrayed and oppressed by the KMT Chinese when they return to Taiwan.
The woman is chained to a past love that she cannot let go. She has a false sense of connection and is unable to move forward until she can let go of it.
