Don't listen to anybody French who tells you it's impossible to appreciate this movie if you're not. Blier's great gift is turning the everyday on its head: you find yourself and laughing uncontrollably at a rape, crying copiously at a wedding and suddenly finding your perceptions of what is and is not acceptable uncomfortably shifting.
