Review of Going Places (1974) by Georgios L — 13 Dec 2011
3: Comparing this to Mike Leigh's Naked, which I watched a few days later is instructive. Some of the actions are the same, namely verbal abuse, physical abuse, hooliganism, and rape, but the tone is entirely different.
These actions are made light of here, whereas they are brutal in Naked. The tone here is one of frivolousness. It's hard to believe that anything could really go wrong here or that these actions have lasting and damaging effects (for the most part at least).
Moreau's character certainly brings a darker element into the film, but we quickly move on from this. The title is interesting as well, as it's a bit tongue-in-cheek and inappropriate, at least in a conventional idiomatic sense.
I only wish we had seen more of Huppert. She is without a doubt one of my all-time favorite actresses and I'd never seen her this young before.
