Review of Gentlemen Broncos (2009) by Cassie D — 15 Nov 2009
Lots of laughs and gross-out moments. Like a Japanese cartoon come to life in a rural Utah town. The characters are caricatures and I really liked that. It was disgusting and disturbing sometimes and it was all the better for that.
These are American folk subcultures rarely seen on screen and I felt okay laughing at these people while still being able to sympathize with them. It's ironic to me that a Mormon couple can make funny gay characters that I didn't find offensive.
It is really nice to see comedy that can laugh at human misery without being mean-spirited. The middle of the film is weak but the ending payoffs are hilarious. Quirk is great to watch especially when it feels raw and low budget like this and not contrived like so many indie films.
