Review of Friends with Money (2006) by Laurel B — 21 Aug 2008
This movie is a small miracle. I'm probably overrating it a touch; but in the face of hyperbolic praise for a summer of crap, I think a movie like Holofcener's has to be celebrated. And to the shame of contemporary American film culture, Holofcener has been all but completely ignored.
This is her best work, and suggests that she is beginning to develop a unique visual aesthetic to complement her razor-sharp and insightful writing. Because there are so few this doesn't amount to much, but Holofcener is hands down America's best female director.
