Review of Frantz (2016) by Tim M — 05 Apr 2017
What a treat this was. Always keeping you engaged, 'Frantz' is beautiful, poignant, and thoughtful. Featuring a breakthrough performance from Paula Beer, who plays Anna. The dialogue and storyline are simple, yet the movie doesn't satisfy conventional thought and manages to stay on track.
Part drama, part mystery and part love story, writer and director François Ozon intertwines the characters and they portray multi-levels, but they do it in such a subdued way. Finally we get a movie that is complex in story, yet simple.
It's a balance that we sadly rarely have. This is an early 2017 Top 10 list and is strictly for those who love the art of the process. Lastly, what a use of color and black and white. Final Score: 8.
4/10.
