Review of Film Socialisme (2010) by Brad X — 25 Feb 2011
Godards last film is interesting but nothing more than ramblings about what is wrong with our society. Its a film essay so the only semblance of narrative revolves around a Cruise ship on the Mediterranean, and The various ports it stops at.
Most of the film is a fragmented analysis of European history which does feature some absolutely stunning images through out. Many of Godard's trademarks are prevalent from the gorgeous framing and editing, how he plays sound against image, and his anti-establishment sensibility (in this case his focus mostly being on capitalism).
In the end this film is so loaded with ideology that it feels empty to me. I can definitely understand why some people hold this film highly, though for me it's worth watching just for the aesthetic aspects from the framing to the editing.
