Review of El Diablo (1990) by Lawrence W — 22 Jul 2014
An HBO TV movie that goes out of its way to keep its tongue firmly in cheek. Anthony Edwards of ER fame is a naive schoolteacher Billy Ray, who takes to heart the dime store novels, takes it upon himself to rescue a female student who was kidnapped by a Mexican bandito.
Along the way, he is aided by (the look of his tattered coat) a former buffalo soldier named Van Leek whose horse is so skittish that he has to put cotton in its ears anytime a gun goes off. Van Leek helps Billy Ray put together a crack(ed) team of gunfighters, including John Glover (an affable, hammish preacher), Joe Pantoliano (as the writer Billy Ray admires, looking for some redemption himself) and Miguel Sandoval (a three fingered dynamite man who shares a vitriolic friendship with Glover).
It's a fun, bloody, and enjoyable western comedy.
