Review of Donnie Brasco (1997) by Aslyn E — 04 May 2010
One of the classic gangster films. Saw this for like the 6th time and it still packs one hell of an emotional punch. Al Pacino's portrayal of a nice man who just happens to be a gangster make you feel real sympathy for a guy who's been overlooked for 30 years by those he calls his family.
It says something when you know this guy is a murderer but you still want him to suceed in becoming a boss of the mafia. Johnny Depp's deliberatly wooden-style performance perfectly caputures a man who frequently has to keep his emotions in check as his family life crumbles in the midst of the operation.
So many scenes stick out but my favourite is probably the sequence on the boat where Pacino's character "Lefty" gets left out of the meeting of the bosses. Heartbreaking, you shouldn't really care but you do.
Your film collection isn't complete without this gem.
