Review of Dhobi Ghat (2010) by Anand M — 16 Mar 2011
From the very first sequence one can tell that Kiran Rao is here to stay; she is a story-teller and does not get caught up with making this a commercial mess. This is a pure art-movie; it has subtle qualities and executes a beautiful balance for its storyline.
The casting is great and so is the soundtrack which is never distracting and thankfully not used as a means to highlight character introductions or dramatic scenes. Much like the overall movie, it is subtle and fits perfectly.
One can argue that Rao does not take to many chances with the story, she could have easily led some scenes to be more dramatic by taking a few chances. But her safe approach still works and was a joy to watch.
Overall, Dhobi Ghat is a treat from all film-making aspects, and though it will not appeal to all due to its methodic structure.
