Review of Detropia (2012) by Laura B — 09 Oct 2012
I loved this documentary. I sought it out at Sundance because I was familiar with Heidi Ewing and Rachel Grady's work, like Jesus Camp and 12th & Delware, and was excited to see their latest doc.
I think they've hit another home run with this documentary because like their other work, DETROPIA is eye-opening and reveals a very personal take on the city of Detroit. It focuses on the real issues happening currently in Detroit and has very poignant moments featuring both young and old citizens who are empowered to fight hard for their hometown.
It really makes the viewer want to stand up for our cities in America that have been hit hard by the depression, and I'm sure even more so for those who are native Detroiters. Great documentary that has a point of view but wasn't overwrought with heavy narratives trying to sway an audience.
I look forward to seeing their future docs.
