One of the most important war films ever made and definitely one of the best filmed and best acted. For once, a film that recognises that there were non-Americans in WWII, so conspicuously absent from jingoistic historical trash like Saving Private Ryan. And they really did have one-armed African soliders - the French took anyone they could get.

To think that even the actors didn't know about the mistreatment of African conscripts before they made this film just adds to the subtle tragedy.

A stern but beautifully delivered message to countless French governments that have used colonial workers as canon fodder for the last 60 years, while they are more French than FN nationalists wil ever be.

A lot of French people I've heard don't like this film, not becuase it's badbly made, not because it's untrue, but because they think it's anti-French. They should grow up.
