Review of Day Night Day Night (2006) by Scott K — 09 Oct 2007
The best movie of 2007. I was completely enthralled and moved. I was on edge for hours after, and I'm not completely sure why, but I think it has to do with the skills of the filmmakers, and their understanding of and compassion for humanity.
Director Julia Loktev and actress Luisa Williams deliver incredible film debuts, and come off as seasoned pros. Loktev's finds the perfect blend of potent realism with hallucinatory surrealism, without cancelling each of them out.
I also loved her meticulousness and attention to detail, while at the same time she was spontaneous. Going guerrilla style out on the streets of time square must have been one of the most exhilirating filmmaking experiences, and while watching it I shared their enthusiasm.
The film's conclusion is completely shattering and wonderous. This movie made me happy to be alive. See it now.
