Review of Dark Waters (1993) by Private U — 13 Feb 2008
Like the best films of Dario Argento, with a good dose of HP Lovecraft mixed in. I was very impressed by how well Mariano Baino was able to sustain its mood. Usually, with Argento and Fulci, you have beautifully done sequence punctuated by dull, clinical scenes of people having dinner or police detactives yamming on about evidence.
Not here. Much of the movie is silent, and, in fact, it's easy to forget that it takes place in modern times. Still, like many of these, there are plot-holes, illogical scenes and characters that do things that make no motivational sense.
It doesn't matter. If you are open to it, this is a film of dread over gore suspense over shock. Watch it with Suspiria for a real treat!
