Review of Dancer (2016) by Jocelyn S — 22 Apr 2017
I grew up dancing ballet and completely connected with Sergei's struggle to want 'a normal life'. Dance, classic ballet in particular, consumes you and uber-talented Steven Cantor did an incredibly moving job of capturing this on film.
DANCER is a riveting story about sacrifice (from both Sergei and his family) and determination. There were parts of the film where I laughed, rooted for Sergei, was in complete awe of his talent and even where I cried.
The self and family sacrifices/struggles, the rigid world of ballet and structure of dancer's careers, the wanting to just know who you are and freedom to be an artist where many aspects of the film dance and non-dance views alike can connect to.
I haven't been moved by a documentary like this in a long time.
