Review of Cyrano de Bergerac (1950) by Arnold G — 02 May 2010
One of the greatest stories of all time. The figure of Cyrano stands as an inspiration to anyone who's ever had a romantic thought in their head. Jose Ferrer will always be Cyrano to me. He simply owned the role and deserved the Oscar.
I think part of the reason the overall production looks sort of 'stagey' is because Ferrer is such a force on the screen. Everything else looks a little less there, a little less real because Cyrano is larger than everything around him and his intensity draws the attention like the sun draws the planets.
His performance is as inescapable as gravity.
