Polanski seems to have the corner on the 'claustrophobic dark comedy' market. Cul-de-Sac is a great example of his most effective work: uncomfortable, dark and oddly funny. Holed up for a night and a day in an isolated castle in England are a married couple and two gangsters.

The result is seething tension, sexual and otherwise, strange unity and ultimate catastrophe in the making. While not quite as disturbing as Repulsion, or as intricate as Knife in the Water, Cul-de-Sac is incredibly effective.
