Review of Cromwell (1970) by Mike G — 02 Apr 2011
It seems fashionable among the critical community to malign this picture unnecessarily dwelling on the film's faults and ignoring its virtues. It's certainly no "A Man for All Seasons" but it has visual scale and impressive battle sequences and other things of note.
The history is dicey, but this is a movie afterall and liberties were taken to make it play, which it does even though some of it is a little awkward and hammy. Richard Harris is fairly sensational as Cromwell and Alec Guinness is exceptional as Charles I.
Others overact in the grand historic drama tradition, and others still are really great like Nigel Stock. Not a bad flick.
