Review of Creation (2009) by Johnny J — 07 Jan 2010
While ostensibly about the writing of the origin of the species, this movie is more of a human drama about the loss of a child and the conflict between scientific ideas and religious opinion. On both sides it can be very heavy handed, but overall the story still manages to be engaging and is beautifully acted and produced.
Only broad outlines and small random details of Darwin's scientific thought and discovery are found in the film. Making full sense of these references probably requires you to have already read Darwin's book. Therefore I am skeptical how much scientific edification anyone would take from this film. I can not comment on its larger historical accuracy, except to note that events are probably compressed, simplified, moved, exaggerated and invented for dramatic purposes.
