Review of Countdown to Zero (2010) by Stephen C — 18 Jan 2011
We are in a golden period for documentary Cinema and this film is one of those golden films which is part informative and part very scary about the dark history of Nuclear weapons.
The film sets out to show how easy it is to make a nuclear "dirty Bomb" and circumvent all security channels.
It also shows how close we have come to all out war from the rising of the Moon ,Flocks of Geese and most disturbing of all when the Russians forgot to pass on info ,which led to Boris Yeltsin been given the nuclear switch in 1995.
The documenatary does of course feature many talking heads from FW De Klerk to Tony Blair who all have a view on Nuclear weapons and the power and destruction they cause.
The film also shows the devastation a blast would cause wiping out millions with one small blast and how some Whitehouse aides thought this was a mere trifle as long as they prevailed .
The film does get preachy in parts ,but once you understand what the film is trying to say you can forgive it for being preachy when the subject is one than we must understand.
Powerful stuff and well worth a second viewing.
