Review of Comrades, Almost a Love Story (1996) by Farah W — 19 Sep 2007
I saw this film by coincidence on celestial channel a year ago and at first thought it was just another slow-moving, artsier-than-thou Chinese flick. And yes, it turned out to be a VERY GOOD slow-moving, artsier-than-thou Chinese flick.
The slow pace is more absorbing than boring and it is essential to the story and plotline since its all about the patience and survival of unrequited love over time and the harshness of life's up and downs.
Maggie Cheung carries the movie with strength and unforgettable presence. She's a goddess irreplaceable by the new Zhangziyis of today's Mandarin Cinema. It's beautiful, meaningful, and compelling.
Love it!
