Review of Certified Copy (2010) by Eric H — 21 Jul 2012
Fascinating, intriguing and one-of-a-kind drama about the value of art, art imitating life, how everything and nothing can be 'original', set within what at first appears a charming if derivative romance.
Juliette Binoche is superb in a complex and satisfying role, and William Shimell almost matches her brilliance. "Certified Copy" is like an especially philosophical, theoretical version of "Before Sunset" (and don't think I don't realise the irony in that statement).
It's ideas and explorations are deceptively dense, even if the film itself is surprisingly accessible, with repeat viewings likely to reward. Striking, intelligent cinema.
