Review of Calvary (2014) by Oliver A — 04 Aug 2014
The best movie of the year, so far. An Irish-Noir with the brilliant premise of a parish priest being told in a confession booth that he will be killed on the following Sunday. What follows is a tense cavalcade of intricate characters as potential suspects and a slow reveal of the honest contempt the small village harbours for both the Catholic doctrine and for the priest himself.
Expectations are overthrown by the second as a crisis of faith and morality develops over the course of an impeccable script which resonates a Joycean/Beckett-esque sense of absurdity and drab poignancy.
Gripping throughout, and I imagine people will analyse it for many years to come.
