Review of Brighton Rock (2010) by David B — 22 May 2012
I was expecting a bit more of this, an updated, closer to the book, version of the famous film which originally starred Richard Attenborough. Bought forward to the 60s it was difficult to see the point. Sam Riley's portrayal of villain Pinkey was confusing. For the first half of the film he seemed to care for the hapless Rose then all of a sudden we discover he hates her. Any remaining sympathy disappears. Riseborough was convincing as Rose but any performances, good or bad, of the other cast members was lost in the confusion. There wasn't even an good 60s music.
Good trivia, both actors who had a fight at the start have previously played Ian Curtis (Control and 24 Hour Party people)......
