Review of Brideshead Revisited (2008) by Paul R — 15 Oct 2008
I so love the 1981 adaptation with Jeremy Irons that I really didn't want to like this new version and thought that it couldn't possibly be as good. I have to admit, however, that it really is very good and I did like it, despite my intentions.
The cast are superb, especially Ben Wishaw and the great Emma Thompson. It's interesting that they chose to focus on the religion of the Marchmain's more in this version rather than the crumbling world of the aristocracy that I think comes out more in the book.
This is a wonderfully haunting film, but they did have a good story to work with.
