Review of Bookies (2003) by Amanda X — 11 Sep 2004
DVD First Viewing, 2 Illsley film seen.
There is a scene in Bookies where Nick Stahl is supposed to be nervous when being told about his 3.68 GPA. His scholarships require him to have a 3.7. Nick's body is shaking so much in his chair you would figure he was having a seizure. Now, my question is whether he was stressing over his GPA or because the mob was after him. It was a bad scene to show the latter. And an even worse scene to show the former, because with the money he was making at his "bookie" gig he could easily afford school. This is a wannabe film. Somewhere between The Rules of Attraction and Danny Boyle or Guy Ritchie, but it comes out more like 9 Dead Gay Guys or Garage Days.
