Review of Bob le Flambeur (1956) by Paul B — 10 Aug 2007
Along with "Rififi" and "The Killing", this protoypical hardboiled heist film paved the way for an entire genre, but hasn't aged all that well. The actual robbery is secondary to a psychological portrait of the titular gambler Bob, the now-cliched world-weary, trenchcoat-clad criminal trying to go straight.
Dry Gallic humour leavens the proceedings, foreshadowing "Ocean's Eleven" and its offspring.
