Review of Blue Is the Warmest Color (2013) by Kevin W — 01 Feb 2015
I don't know if Blue is in fact the warmest colour, but the entire film is alight with it. It really is beautifully made; visually beautiful, beautifully acted (and the two leads are exceptional, showing more raw emotion than anything dished out into cinema in the last decade, or maybe more). There's so much to focus on and admire and it's a real shame that the film will be forever marked for its controversy. It shouldn't be an issue. Blue is the Warmest Color is too stunning to marred by divisive opinions on gay relationships. It's explored here in unrestricted detail and honesty, but the what film is really about is first love and the troubles of growing up and self-discovery.
It's a modern masterpiece.
