Review of Bird (1988) by Nacho S — 21 Sep 2008
This one is a bit of a slug-fest. The script never goes past the standard "artist fights demons with drugs" bio-pic. When it does try to get creative with the use of flashbacks, it just gets confusing.
At one point a character has a flashback in which another character has a flashback. Unfortunately, Eastwood is such a straightforward director, he's unable to compensate for this. His best work seems to be with strong scripts.
There are very good performances, especially by Forest Whitaker. But the story just keeps slogging through his relapses. Eventually, you just end up waiting (& hoping) for him to die - not a great place for an audience to be in.
Go buy some Charlie Parker CDs instead.
