Review of Big Stone Gap (2014) by Greg B — 10 Oct 2015
"Big Stone Gap" is a period piece starring Ashley Judd as a hapless maiden in a small coal mining town in Western Virginia in the 1970's. She is supported by Whoopi Goldberg who seems to be the town gossip.
Everyone in the town talks about Judd's character Ave and how she can't seem to settle down with anyone. She is both the intrigue and laughing stock of the town simultaneously. Though this film was an authentic period piece, I found the plot lagging in parts, and it is almost too schmaltzy for my taste.
It is very cookie-cutter and highly predictable. While Ashley Judd does fine acting, I don't think her acting can hold together a flimsy script that really goes nowhere. This film can be very boring in parts.
While not terrible, I thought this film could have used some polishing ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ C+.
