Review of Belle de Jour (1967) by Morten Ø — 24 Oct 2010
Catherine Deneuve as Severine, a wife of a rich successful doctor, explores her erotic desires as a day time prostitute called Belle de Jour. Typical for Bunuel it's difficult to tell the difference between dream and reality and between reality and fantasy. It is as if you witness three layers in this movie each being entangled in one and another.
What I like most about this particularly Bunuel movie is that it's still possible to try to figure out a narrative structure and that the story with all it's layers is extremely interresting. The characters may seem a bit surreal, but excepts from all its dream sequences you still feel like you have a pretty clear idea about what is going on.
