Review of Beaufort (2007) by Andromeda Y — 23 Mar 2008
Wisely steering clear of the convoluted politics of the Lebanese civil war, the film chooses to focus instead on a bunch of Israeli soldiers whose spirits are broken by a senseless war led by a government that regards its people as lab-rats with dispensable lives.
It took a bit of time for the film to find its focus, and for a while, it's tough to tell one soldier apart from another. But when the film finally found its bearings 45 mins in, it's a powerful, tragic indictment of futile wars fought under the guise of patriotism and national egos - even triumphing Letters from Iwo Jima for its quiet horrors & ironies on display.
The only sore point is the convenient dramatics: whenever you have a big emotional scene focusing on one soldier's hopes and dreams, that soldier is almost destined to to be killed immediately after.
