Review of Barney's Version (2010) by Fong K — 09 Nov 2012
The art of storytelling is often lost to most directors in Hollywood. The fact that this film was not from the Hollywood machine perhaps explains why it tells such a good story. Some movies with good stories leave you feeling sad, angry, or elated.
But Barney's Version leaves you feeling satisfied, like after you finish a meal of roast beef, mashed potatoes and gravy made from the drippings. Barney is a likeable and tragic man and Paul Giamatti may spend the rest of his career and never find a role that touches on some many parts of the human character - true love, doubt, joy and desperation.
The rest of the cast fully supports this oscar-worthy performance by Giamatti. Get a glass of wine and rent this fine movie.
