Review of Another Earth (2011) by Karen B — 11 Sep 2012
Another Earth is one of those few low budget indie movies that pushes all of its contemporaries out of the way. With a compelling story co-written by lead actress Brit Marling, the film examines that idea that somewhere in space, there are other versions of us.
Are they better? Did they make different choices? Would they want to meet us? All these questions are asked or answered, but not in the stereotypical sci-fy way. There are no subplots that involve government officials trying to decipher the meaning of it all, nor are there people on the other planet trying to annihilate us.
Such plot lines are outdated, particularly in a film that's so character driven. Everything is kept very 'grassroots,' in favor of showing how this other Earth affects Rhoda and John.
