Review of American: The Bill Hicks Story (2010) by Michael C — 08 Oct 2010
An excellent biographical documentary of comedy legend Bill Hicks, detailing his rise from an admittedly skilled comic detailing typical light material to becoming the icon who aggressively tackled social and political mores and challenged his audience to not necessarily always like him but to respect his pursuit to speak honestly and openly about everything.
It is a good overview of his entire career, narrated by those who knew him best, and put together between video and animated images from Bill's life. Watching this made me remember once more what made me admire and look up to Bill's style of comedy.
I don't think he was always correct in his thinking, but I always felt he was honest, and his style exuded fearlessness. This documentary is a great portrayal of his allure and what made him among the greatest to ever hit the mic.
