Review of Albert Nobbs (2011) by Emilie R — 04 Mar 2012
Glen Close aside, Janet McTeer is the real powerhouse actor(?) of this film. Where as Albert keeps some femininity in his reluctance and reserve, McTeer struts across the screen not only owning the role but commands the attention like a brash man.
The film plays as one would expect for a film, but the ending is pure playwright material. Not a feel good movie, but a thinking movie. It allows us to ask the question of what is gender? Is it defined by our physicality or is it a mental state.
Albert struggles with this question as we all do today.
