Review of Akira (1988) by Steven A — 04 Nov 2012
The crown jewel in Japanese animation's golden era of 1985-1995. Although completely cel-based, this anime was so groundbreaking in plot and scenery that it set the stage for many live action movies to follow.
Intertwining themes of evolution, human progression, corruption, the impending future for Generation XYZ and the meaning of friendship move together seamlessly, with characters that can easily be identified with.
Some critics choose to focus on the violence, but the core themes supersede the death and destruction and there is far more to explore. Without the movie's extremity in all areas, it would have lost it's otherworldly and dystopian feel.
An extraordinary achievement, especially with the newly updated English dubbing from Pioneer that offers a more realistic and relatable script.
