Review of Akira (1988) by Julius L — 11 May 2011
Not only is this one of the most influential movies of the entire anime genere, it is one of the most influential films to come out of the entire 1980s, setting the muse for various directors. As a hardcore Blade Runner fan, I can't help but to compare Neo-Tokyo to LA 2019, (even though Blade Runner was an obvious inspiration) as they are both the dystopic megaopolis of greed, corruption, class separation, and of course, a breeding ground for human experimentation.
Filled with plenty of action, and striking images, the film is also filled with philosophy and the human drama of being raised in a post-apocalyptic society. Cameron was certainly correct when he compared Akira to Terminator, calling the latter "Disney Land".
