Review of Air Force (1943) by Roger R — 19 Jun 2010
Somehow Howard Hawks breathes life into this predictable piece of war time propaganda assisted by a good ensemble cast especially arthyr Kennedy and John garfield - the use of archival footage and integration of models with a real plane is particularly good for the period.
I couldn't help noticing the one of the "Japanese" battleships sunk was actually footage of a WW1 battleship of the Austrian Hungrian empire from archival footage - I once watced a similar kind of movie with a Czech friend who had grown up under the iron curtain during the cold war - he said soviet war propaganda films in the cold war were almost identical to the American ones except they were in russian.
