Review of 8 Women (2002) by Ollie W — 28 Jun 2011
A wonderful, quintessentially French classic, complete with lovely musical numbers, an excellent, slow-burning script, a sumptuously realized decor and surely one of the strongest ever female-lead casts to grace our screens.
Ozon is in his element here, perfectly synchronizing the various chaotic characters as they all convene, one snowy night, at the secluded country house of Catherine Deneuve's upper class Gaby and witness the murder of the family patriarch and the hilarious ensuing amateur investigation by the remaining 8 women. Shot in beautiful, period detail with finger clicking tunes and utterly perfect performances all round - this is wildly humorus, joyous fun and marks itself as a true genre classic. Agatha Christie with suspenders and incest.
Superb.
